Playa de Los Muertos

Playa de Los Muertos is the most famous public beach in Puerto Vallarta, its shoreline of golden sand stretches for a mile. It is very easy to access the beach by the water taxi from Puerto Vallarta, or by city bus or a taxi.

Although its name is quite frightening, as it means the beach of the Dead, it is a great spot loved by all tourists who are looking for action. There are a few legends that tell of the origin of its name. One says about the battle between local miners and pirates after which the locals found bodies on the beach, However, considering the fact that there were no miners in Vallarta, its quite hard to believe that this legend is true.

There is a big array of activities offered that keeps any tourist entertained. Sports enthusiasts will undoubtedly enjoy windsurfing, snorkeling, jet ski, boogie boarding or parasailing. Most of the time waves are quite gentle, and the ocean is safe for water sports and swimming. Staying on the shore, you may play beach volleyball, take a horseback ride and explore the area, or arrange a trip by boat or water taxi to nearby small villages of the southern zone. If you just want to relax, sunbathe under one of palapas listening to the ocean breeze, or enjoy fishing of the rocks. However, this may be not the best place for those who are looking for solitude and a quite reading or nap, as there is lots of action around.

Playa  de Los Muertos is a perfect place for people- watching: here you may meet tourists and expats from all over the world, as well as friendly families of locals. The South Side of the beach is a gathering place for lesbian and gay tourists, while the North part is crowded with the locals and straight tourists. Enjoy getting new acquaintances, or just observe the diverse groups of people laughing, drinking beer or margaritas, hawking and having fun.
